Three Day Roadschool Trip to Vancouver, B.C.

O Canada, O Canada! We just wrapped up learning all about our northern neighbor in our homeschool. The first half of the week was spent immersed in books and internet research and the latter half of the week was spent experiencing those pages coming to life on a roadschool trip to Vancouver, B.C.!

Because of the weather, we left the RV at home and just drove up in the truck. We were able to score a great deal on a cozy home through Airbnb, which served as the perfect base camp for our roadschool trip.

Day 1

We started off our first day in Vancouver, B.C. with kids learning about forest nature and suspension bridges at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park.

After romping around for a few hours, we headed over to Stanley Park to explore tide pools at Second Beach and then make human versions of the First Nations Totem Poles!

We wrapped up our day with dinner at The Spaghetti Factory (because #kids) over in Gastown District.

Day 2

P.E. day, in the form of showshoeing at Grouse Mountain. It was the perfect time to be up on there because it was DUMPING fresh powder to play in! The kids had a blast tromping around on their snowhoes, and then later playing in the Sliding Zone.

After a full day of snow, we warmed up with high tea at Neverland Tea Salon in Kitsilano. It was the perfect ending to a magical roadschool trip day!

Day 3

Just 45 minutes east of the city is an adorable town called Langley. If you are in the area and are looking for an awesome roadschool trip experience for your kids (or an excuse for them to burn off their road trip wiggles), stop at the Fort Langley National Historic Site for some educational fun. Once an 1800’s fur-trading post for Hudson’s Bay Company, it is now a living museum complete with hands-on experiences and costumed interpreters.

Our kids loved this place; it was really like getting to step into the 19th century! They made bannock bread, learned how to make barrels, and were able to watch a blacksmith in action. Best part? Kids are FREE!

Langley also happens to be the home of Macinnes Farms . . .

. . . where the set of Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart is hidden! The girls and I (and even the boys sometimes) LOVE watching the show and getting lost in the stories of Hope Valley … so OF COURSE this had to be part of our roadschool trip itinerary, LOL.

Pictures were limited on the set because another production is currently filming, but we were able to access many of the buildings like the saloon, the jail, Abigails’s Cafe, Lee’s office, the church, row houses, and even the mine! The kids were tickled about being in Ms. Thatcher’s schoolroom and home.

The owner spent about an hour and a half giving us a private tour of the ENTIRE property, telling us about her family’s farm and how the Jamestown Movie Set came to be. Such an amazing experience for us Hearties. 🙂
