Middle ages field trip to Medieval Times!
Pretending to be squires.

When you first arrive at the castle (we went to the one in Buena Park, CA), you will be assigned one of 6 knights to cheer for (basically, a sorting method for different sections of the arena). We were assigned to the Red & Yellow knight!

While you wait for the doors to open, you can grab a pre-dinner drink at the bar …

. . . and learn about weaponry used during the time period.

Homeschoolers are gonna dig the tidbits of information throughout the castle.

There is also a gift shop, where the kids purchased their own wooden weapons, which were fun to wave around during our middle ages field trip dinner!

Peruse the Hall of Arms displaying medieval artifacts and get a peek at the steed who will be displaying their horsemanship during the show (or play with your weapons, like our kids did).

DURING THE SHOW

Expect to dine just like people did in the 11th century – with your hands! The four-course meal included:

  • garlic bread
  • tomato bisque soup
  • roasted chicken served with sweet buttered corn & herb-basted potatoes
  • lemon pound cake for dessert

Dinner also included coffee and non-alcoholic beverages. If you are vegetarian, they have an option for you as well.

A snap during our show at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament with kids.

For about 2 hours, we were entertained with jousting, sword fighting, and horses dancing. There was even a falcon flight during our middle ages field trip night!

The competitive atmosphere that is created when you are cheering for your own knight made for such a fun experience; the kids had a blast screaming for him and waving their swords when he rode by.

AFTER THE SHOW

Before leaving the castle, all the characters come out for photos. There was a long line for our Red & Yellow knight but Cha Cha was able get a pic with the Queen!

If you love incorporating memorable experiences as part of your learning, Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament is a great option when studying the middle ages. It was a fun way for my kids make connections with the information we had learned about squires, knights, and chivalry in the weeks leading up to our outing.
