Overnight Field Trip to Historic Davenport Hotel

Overnight Field Trip to Historic Davenport Hotel

Baby Sis: “Why would a hotel like this be built when a war was happening?”

Me: “Well, first of all, it was built right at the beginning of the war. And do you remember where World War 1 took place?”

Baby Sis: “Ohhh … it was all the way in Europe, right?”

Me: “Yes! And did the United States get involved right away?”

And then our discussion continued from there, expanding from the war and reviewing what was going on locally in our nation during and after. Click HERE for the resources we used when learning about World War 1.

If you are familiar at all with our family, we LOVE to tie in excursions as part of history learning. And that’s just what we did when we visited Spokane, WA right in the middle of our studies of the early 1900s.

The Historic Davenport Hotel was the perfect place to camp while Big Bro attended an airsoft event nearby, helping my girly-girls make connections with our current history lessons.

They can now peg 1914 as the beginning of The Great War began, because the Historic Davenport Hotel was built in that same year – the first year of the four year war.

And they also got to step back into time, imagining what it was like to enjoy the glamour of the Roaring Twenties, with the hotel’s opulent architecture and design.

Speaking of the Roaring Twenties, my kids enjoyed reading THIS to learn more about era:

The second floor of the Historic Davenport Hotel, where all the ballrooms are located, is a great place to explore. Photos from the height of its glory adorn the walls and my girls especially loved pretending to dance at a ball at The Hall of Dodges.

Here’s something a homeschool family (or anyone with kids, for that matter) would especially appreciate: They have a history detective (scavenger hunt-like) activity that you can request at the front desk!

Homeschool fun at the Historic Davenport Hotel.

Don’t forget to enjoy a meal at The Palm Court Grill, where they serve their signature Crab Louis Salad.

This “fancy” adventure was a great way to not only a great way to get some mom-daughters time but also cement some the history we were learning!
