We are diving into the 20th century in our homeschool, and are currently camped out at The Great War. Here are some great World War 1 books for kids:

  • Usborne Books and More’s The World Wars covers both the first and second wars. We are loving the interesting bits of information spread out among full-color spreads on every page. If you have visual learners, this is a must in your home library for these major events in history.
  • Archie’s War is a scrapbook style book. There are comics, drawings, and even letters to unfold and pull out!
  • War Game is a longer picture book about for friends who sign up for the army, and their time on the battlefield. Beautiful illustrations and a story made simple for kids to understand, yet doesn’t shy away from the realities of war. Poignant ending.
  • War Horse is our current read-aloud for our current learning. Only three chapters in, and we are all loving the story. It is from the point of view of the main character – a horse. We absolutely love learning history through historical fiction and this one is a great one.

There are not very many kid-friendly resources on the topic so if you have any more suggestions of World War 1 books for kids, please comment them below!

Update: We ended up doing an overnight “field trip” somewhat related to this time period to a historic hotel. The hotel itself is not directly related to World War 1, but by going to this place, conversations propped up that initiated a review about the Great War and the U.S.’s role in it.
